HeatherLee Foods is a locally inspired culinary venture proudly serving from within Knutes Taproom in downtown Shippensburg, PA. Founded by a passionate family team, HeatherLee was created to bring fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully crafted meals to the community we love. While we operate independently, our partnership with Knutes allows us to offer a welcoming and vibrant dining experience in a shared space that feels like home. From savory entrées to seasonal specials, our menu reflects our commitment to quality ingredients and hometown hospitality. As we grow, our goal is to expand our reach through catering, special events, and takeout services—always with a focus on food that brings people together.
Historical Overview
- 1778: The Property, originally 129 acres across two tracts, was first owned by James Crockett, uncle of Davy Crockett.
- 1798: George Beltzhoover purchased the property and constructed limestone buildings, including the Mansion House, Still House, and a barn now converted to Stone Lodge and Carriage House.
- 1928: Dr. Horace Sadler acquired the Allenberry tract for use as a summer retreat.
- 1944: Charles Heinze purchased the property and initiated extensive renovations, adding dining facilities and establishing the Allenberry Playhouse in 1949.
- 2015: Mike Kennedy acquired Allenberry, revitalizing it into a modern resort while preserving its historic charm.
Historic Buildings
- Fairfield Hall: Central hub featuring The Barn Restaurant, Mercantile, 1798 Terrace, and various meeting spaces. It serves as the main check-in area for guests.
- Stone Lodge & Carriage House: Originally a stone barn built by George Beltzhoover, now an event space with a bar and lodging.
- Allenberry Cottages: Three cozy, modern cottages popular with hikers and fishermen.
- Creek House: Spacious mid-century home with 5 bedrooms, ideal for large families and groups.
- Still House: One of the first limestone buildings, originally constructed by James Crockett.
- The Mansion: Built between 1812-1820, a 4,000-sq. ft. farmhouse overlooking Yellow Breeches Creek, retaining its historic charm post-renovation.
- Meadow Lodge: Built in 1960, home to Changes Day Spa and offering additional lodging.
- Pine Lodge: Serene lodging nestled in the wooded pines.
- The Playhouse: Opened in 1949, a theatre-style venue hosting plays and events.
Allenberry Today
The Kennedy Family purchased Allenberry in 2015 with plans to elevate the property and take this Central Pennsylvania gem to new heights.
Owner Mike Kennedy first experienced Allenberry at a very young age during memorable swimming trips with his family. Even at an early age, Allenberry made a lasting impression on Kennedy. Mike and his wife Katie understand the significance of this historic landmark as well as the uniqueness it brings to the surrounding Cumberland County.
Since 2015, the Kennedys have continued to reinvigorate and strengthen this historic landmark to truly become a place - or home - that people can fall in love with.
